My CT, Mr. Bruneau, has four different classes that he plans on having me take over gradually throughout the weeks I will be student teaching. One of them, the first one I’m going to take over, is a CP Biology class of sophomores. Mr. Bruneau is going to hand the class over to me as they start a chapter on the origin of life and let me take them through that, evolution, the evolution of primates, classification, and then start the kingdom fungi before he takes the class back. As of right now I plan on making my unit plan on evolution. This will be the second chapter that I teach so I think it is a good one to plan my unit plan for. My CT explained that a lot of student teachers like to take the first few lessons to get comfortable with the class and practice their classroom management skills before jumping into the unit plan they put so much effort into. Also, I think there is a lot of good, interesting material that I can cover on evolution.

My CT used to teach a whole elective course called “controversial biology” in which they only talked about biology topics that have caused major controversies and debates in our society. I think evolution will be a good unit to get good conversations going in our classroom among students from different backgrounds. I am also thinking of making the project for this unit a sort of evolution timeline in which the students would have to draw and describe the living organisms that once inhabited this earth all the way up to humans. I am looking forward to coming up with more ideas for this unit plan, making it, and of course eventually teaching it.
